Man if only T Mac realized when he was in his prime how amazing of a passer he was. He still takes it as a bad thing when he says Van Gundy told him he wouldn’t lead the league in scoring, when reality Van Gundy saw T Mac as what LeBron is now.

Yao and Tmac were never surrounded by good role players when they were both healthy. Unlike Cuban, previous Rockets owner Leslie Alexander didn't want to spent one penny over salary cap to build a team around them. In one of the playoff games against Utah, only 4 Rockets players scored in the entire game.

My very first NBA game was like 14 years ago and I watched my beloved Celtics get absolutely clapped by T-Mac & Yao in Boston. If I remember correctly it was 111-80 Houston... I had to beg my dad to stay for the entirety of the fourth quarter. Those two were on another level, both of them are HoF level talents in my opinion!

I think it's time to be real with ourselves. Yao was trash. He was too slow to defend the paint, he was too weak to control the boards. I remember when they played Dallas in 05 and Diop and Dampier were KILLING him down low. He was nice to see because he was big as hell but very overrated and tmac's career would have been better off staying in Orlando
Jie Chou
Jie Chou 5 oy oldin
Dampier killing Yao down low? Yao vs Dampier career head to head :19.9 points to 6.4 points.Yao was never too slow to defend paint. Rockets was always a top defensive team when Yao's healthy. Yao was one of the best man to man defender in the paint, centers who didn't have an outside shot like Dwight Howard always got destroyed by Yao. Infact Yao was one of the most underrated players of all time. His impact on both ends of the floor are bigger than his regular stats shows. In advanced stats, his career PER is 24th all time in NBA, his win shares per 48 minutes is 23rd all time in NBA.

Tony Chen
Tony Chen 5 oy oldin
Because every foul means every perfect free throws, and fun fact, his free throw shooting percentage is 90%, he wouldn't miss majority, he'll just miss some. Teams have to be freaking scared when it comes to fouling Yao, many fouls= many free throws. Omeka Okafor is not even worth guarding Yao, he fouled out of the game.

D. Michael 5 oy oldin
We have no appreciation for what we saw in Yao Ming. We never saw guys 7’5 and above with any moves. Yao’s movements were fluid and he wasn’t a sloth like the ones before him. He took some of Dream’s post moves and could run the floor! True joy to watch man
Tony Chen
Tony Chen 5 oy oldin
You should watch the Match up he had against Shaq in 2005 when Shaq was with the Heat, It was Bonzi Wells that had the Ball when Yao ran heads up straight down the court, the heat Defence couldn't catch up with him and he caught the ball in the right timing and just layed it up and in. And yeah, that game against Portland when he had that behind the back move on one defender and just shocked everybody, watch that one too!

Tony Chen
Tony Chen 5 oy oldin
Both Yao and The Dream have lived up to it, you just didn't watch their first match up when Yao had the time to stop Shaq with only six blocks, on the same game, sometimes he stood his ground still.
Jie Chou
Jie Chou 5 oy oldin
Yao was the only center after Hakeem who played Shaq to a draw after his rookie year. Yao was slow but not soft once he beefed up in his 3rd year. He drew automatic double teams more than anybody else (including Shaq) when he was healthy. Shaq was the only center who regularly played Yao one on one and not getting destroyed. Again your statement shows how underrated Yao was.

Nope, didn't have a long enough career. If he played more games and stayed healthy then no doubt, easy top 50. He had the skills to be one of the best big men of all time, and Shaq himself always says he was always one of the hardest players to play against. Those skills with that height, he's easily top 50. Career? Held back by injuries and didn't get the chance to prove how dominant he actually was.

When Shaq was still peak Diesel he destroyed, poor Yao. As the years went on Shaq’s numbers dipped but those first couple of meetings I think Shaq had like 30pts 15rebs and came back and dropped 40pts on Yao. Shaq’s peak was so unfair. Yao was so huge and skilled like a mofo, but Shaq treated him like everybody else at that time, barbecue chicken. I don’t care if you were 9ft peak Shaq was going to take your lunch money.
flytii 5 oy oldin
Yao didn't start playing til much later, and the Chinese culture is civil and would never disrespect another player as opposed to Americans when it comes to basketball. Yao battled that upbringing. his rocket teammates had to let him know its okay to do that in the nba. if all things being equal, Yao would've busted Shaq every time. they called shaq the most dominate because he used brute force and lacked skill.
DaaBoys2138 5 oy oldin
Jie Chou I’m not getting into upper body strength excuses and all that Yao was 7’6 and was a big dude who played overseas with other grown men. Shaq was just a monster.
DaaBoys2138 5 oy oldin
chacharu33 He may have earned Shaq’s respect but he got killed early on. Shaq dropped 31pts 13rebs to Yao’s 10 and 10 and Shaq dropped 40pts to Yao’s 6pts so having respect for a player doesn’t mean he didn’t get destroyed early on because he did those are facts.
Jie Chou
Jie Chou 5 oy oldin
Yao had no upper body muscle and strength in his first year. After Yao's rookie year they were pretty much evenly matched. They played 11 more games after , Yao won 6 time, grabbed 9 more total rebounds, Shaq won 5 time, score 8 more total points despite played a lot more minutes than Yao. Yao actully had an upper hand when both of them were on the floor.
